Kung-Chung Liu

Born on June 25, 1961, in Taipei, Taiwan, Prof. Kung-Chung Liu first studied law at National Taiwan University, where he received his Bachelor of Law (1983) and Master of Law (1985) degrees. After two years of obligatory military service (1985-1987), he studied law at the University of Munich under Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Gerhard Schricker, who is also Director of Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright and Competition Law, with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) (1987-1991). He graduated with a Doctor of Law in 1991.

In 1992, Prof. Liu became an Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute for Social Sciences and Philosophy (Jurisprudence Division), Academia Sinica. Since 1996, he has been an Associate Research Fellow there. Since 2002, he has been an Research Fellow there. He is currently also a part-time Associate Professor of Law at the Graduate Institute of Law, National Defense University, as well as a Consultant for the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research. He is the author of four books, Likelihood of Confusion according to Trademark Law (in Chinese, 1997), Patent Protection of Computer Program-Related Invention (in Chinese, 2000), The Regulatory Reform in Telecom and the Regulation of Digital Network Industries (in Chinese 2001), and The Protection of Well-Known Marks (in Chinese, 2002). He is also the co-editor of three books, Interpretation of the Constitution in Theory and Practice (in Chinese, with Chien-Liang Lee, 1998), The Protection of Well-Known Marks in Asia (in English, with Heath Christopher, published by Kluwer, 2000) and Regulatory Reform (in Chinese, with Jun-Ji Shih, 2001).

His teaching and research interests are as follows: intellectual property law, antitrust and unfair competition law, telecommunication law.
